Understanding complex systems is an exceptionally demanding task. It is not something that can reasonably be expected of people who are simply trying to navigate everyday life and keep it in balance. And yet, the extent to which what lies ahead becomes difficult – or outright unbearable – will ultimately depend on large numbers of ordinary people and on how they respond.

What we truly fear is uncertainty and chaos. And chaos is created by people in panic: people who do not understand what is happening to them, how they ended up where they are, and who – lacking real knowledge and acting under emotional stress – make decisions that affect not only their own lives, but those of others as well. Most often, they choose poorly. If sharing knowledge achieves nothing more than helping fewer people panic, thereby reducing chaos even slightly, then we believe the effort is already worthwhile.
